About sewing.tools

sewing.tools is a set of free sewing and quilting calculators, plus a machine picker that helps you find the right sewing machine for how you sew. The blog explains the methods behind the math. It's for anyone who'd rather spend their time sewing than doing fabric math.

How the tools work

Answers as you type. Every calculator updates the moment you change a measurement — no submit button — and works in inches or centimetres. Each one shows a worked example and the formula behind it, so you can check the math yourself.

No signup. No accounts, no email sign-ups, no paywall. Open a tool, use it, close the tab.

Private by default. Calculator inputs stay in your browser, and the Site uses no analytics or ads. The machine picker's answers live in the page address so you can share your results; our server reads them to put together your recommendations and doesn't keep them. The privacy policy has the details.

How the machine picker works

Five questions — budget, what you sew, skill level, must-have features, and brand preference — are scored against our catalog of sewing machines and sergers with fixed weights. Machines built for your kind of sewing rank first, and you'll see up to three matches with a plain-language reason for each. There is no sponsored placement: no partner can pay to rank higher.

How we make money

The machine picker and the machine cards on our pages link to partner shops: Linda's Quilt Shoppe for visitors in Canada, and SewingMachinesPlus for visitors in the United States and everywhere else. If you buy a machine through one of those links, we may earn a commission. It never changes your price, and it never changes which machines the picker recommends. That's what keeps every calculator free.
