How many blocks do I need for a 60" × 80" quilt?
For a 60" × 80" quilt made of 10" blocks with 2" sashing and a 3" border:
You enter
- Desired size
- 60" × 80" (152.40 cm × 203.20 cm)
- Finished block
- 10" (25.40 cm)
- Sashing / border
- 2" / 3" (5.08 cm / 7.62 cm)
You get
- Blocks
- 30 blocks (5 across × 6 down)
- Actual quilt size
- 64" × 76" (162.6 cm × 193.0 cm)
- Sashing strips
- 25 horizontal + 24 vertical
- Cornerstones
- 20
The formula: blocks across = round((width − 2 × border) ÷ (block + sashing)); the same for blocks down.

Frequently asked questions
How many quilt blocks do I need?
Divide the quilt's width and height (minus borders) by the block size plus any sashing, and round to whole blocks — then multiply across by down. For a 60" × 80" quilt with 10" blocks, 2" sashing, and 3" borders, that's 5 across × 6 down = 30 blocks.
What are standard quilt sizes?
Common finished sizes are crib 36" × 52", throw 50" × 65", twin 68" × 86", full/double 81" × 96", queen 90" × 108", and king 108" × 108". Sizes vary by maker and by how far you want the quilt to drape over the bed.
Why is my actual quilt size different from my target?
Blocks only come in whole numbers, so the layout rarely hits your target exactly. When the difference is more than 2", adjust the block size, add or widen borders, or change the sashing width to get closer.
How many sashing strips and cornerstones do I need?
Between blocks you need (blocks across × (rows − 1)) horizontal strips and (rows × (blocks across − 1)) vertical strips, each the block size long, plus one cornerstone where every pair of strips crosses. The calculator lists all three counts.
